After years of speculation about the possibility of a Final Fantasy IX remake, FF14 director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida has expressed his thoughts on the idea, stating that he believes it would require multiple games to finish.

The details:

  • In a recent interview with Video Games, the FF16 producer was asked which game from the Final Fantasy series he would like to remake if given the opportunity, and his response was rather unexpected. “Oh man, that’s a super tough question,” he said. “The one that I would like to make myself would be Final Fantasy 3, I think.”

  • Following his answer, Yoshida acknowledged the high demand for an FF9 remake but explained why remaking the title could be challenging due to the original game's scale and would likely require an FF7 remake-style multi-game release. “Of course, I do know there are requests for Final Fantasy 9 to be made, but when you think about Final Fantasy 9, it’s a game with huge volume,” he explained. “When you think about all of that volume, I wonder if it’s possible to remake that as a single title. It’s a difficult one. It is a tough question.”

  • The existence of an FF9 remake was reported in 2021 after the database of Nvidia's GeForce Now service was leaked, listing the game alongside a number of titles later revealed to be in development, including Kingdom Hearts IV and a PC port of FF7 Remake. An alleged leak of the Epic Games Store database also included what appeared to be a listing for the title, albeit under a codename, with fans pointing to a pre-order bonus referencing the Tetra Master card game.

  • However, trusted insiders have stated that, while rumors of a remake are true, the game will not be as large a production as the FF7 remake. Instead of being built from the ground up as a new game, it is said it will use the majority of the original game's systems, and its visuals, while better than a remaster, will not be on par with FF7 Remake.
