Sony has placed restrictions on Japanese pre-orders of the 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro
After scalpers started selling limited 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro systems on sites like Ebay in the UK last week, Sony will require buyers in Japan to prove they own a PS4 or PS5 in order to pre-order the console.
The details:
Pre-orders for the 30th Anniversary line of PS5 consoles and accessories began last week in the UK and the US, giving fans a chance to secure one of the 12,340 PS5 Pro bundles available worldwide. However, shortly after the pre-order period ended in the UK, it was discovered that over 50 listings for the system had appeared on Ebay alone despite the fact that it had not yet shipped, with sellers asking for up to £10,000.
In an effort to combat scalpers, Sony is requiring fans in Japan to prove that they have previously owned a PS4 or PS5 system before they can preorder. Users must sign into a PlayStation Network account that has been actively used on a console for at least 30 hours between February 22, 2014, and September 19, 2024. The account must also be Japanese, and the sign-in ID and My Sony ID must be identical, preventing international users from joining the pre-order.
Pre-orders for the bundle will be open until October 14, but in the likely event that there are more pre-orders than available stock, Sony will hold a lottery to determine who will receive the opportunity to buy one. This replaces the queuing system used in the West, which was criticized by fans for a variety of issues, including failing to maintain positions and making it near impossible to grab a console due to bots.
