Sony has confirmed that players are now opting to subscribe to higher-priced PlayStation Plus tiers and that the service may see more price changes in the future.

The details:

  • In a recent business presentation, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hermen Hulst and president Hideaki Nishino discussed the future of the PS Plus service. Nishino stated that the company plans to “add more value” to the subscription but that it will continue to adjust its pricing strategy “in a dynamic way to maximize profitability."

  • Sony also revealed that around 38% of Plus members are now subscribed to its “Extra” and “Premium” tiers, both of which offer a catalog of games in a similar manner to Xbox’s Game Pass service, for an additional fee. Out of that 38%, 16% are Extra members, while 22% belong to the Premium tier, with the remaining 62% being subscribed to PS Plus Essential, which is required for online play, saving to the cloud, and other core PlayStation features.

  • PS Plus has seen several price hikes in recent years across all major regions. The most recent rise was back in April of this year, which saw the price of a 12-month subscription to Premium increase to $225 from $190, which itself used to be $140 prior to 2023. It's unsurprising that Sony continues to adjust the pricing of the service, given that it made up 14% of all PlayStation revenue in 2024 and continues to be a stable source of income for the platform.
