Following the announcement that Sony had reduced the price of the PlayStation 5 last month, it has been revealed that the number of consoles sold has grown, particularly those bundled with games.
The details:
- The PS5 was confirmed to have received a temporary price drop to lows of £399 across the UK, with the price set to return to normal later around August 10. Retailers such as GAME and Amazon have also been bundling games with consoles to help drive sales, such as Hogwarts Legacy and Gran Turismo 7, resulting in last week becoming the third-best week for the console in 2023, trailing only two weeks in February following the release of an official God of War Ragnarok bundle.
- Due to the cut, GfK (via GamesIndustry.biz) reports that sales of the console increased by 75% overall last week, with a 63% week-on-week increase. The standard console alone saw a 205% increase in unit sales and a 162% increase in revenue, and this version of the PS5 accounted for 73% of total sales.
- Overall, PS5 sales have gained momentum following the official end of the console's shortage, which lasted more than two years after its release in 2020. It was reported in April that 38.4 million units had been sold worldwide, with 6.3 million of those sold during Q1 2023.
More PlayStation news:
- Sony and Microsoft have agreed to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for at least the next ten years, following Microsoft's victory over the Federal Trade Commission, which allows it to complete its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The rest of the publisher's IPs, however, are not covered by the agreement, leaving the door open for future exclusive entries in iconic franchises like Spyro and Crash.
- Sony has announced that the PS5’s Access controller will arrive on December 6 for $89.99 USD. The controller includes a circular base and several modular buttons and sticks to accommodate a variety of physical disabilities.
