A Switch 2 Direct is scheduled for April 2.

After years of speculation, leaks, and rumors, Nintendo has finally unveiled the Switch's successor, simply known as the Nintendo Switch 2, which will receive a new Mario Kart entry.

The details:

  • The company has posted a new two-minute trailer showing off the hardware officially for the first time. As reported from previous leaks, the console features a similar design to the original Switch with a larger screen surrounded by two new Joy-Con controllers.

  • The new Switch 2 Joy-Cons now use a magnetic connector to attach to the console instead of a rail system and feature extra buttons underneath the SL and SR buttons on the back of each controller. There is no confirmation if the rumored mouse-like functionality is present in the new Joy-Cons as of yet.

  • Nintendo has yet to reveal the pricing of the new system or a release date, but it has announced that it will arrive this year and that a Switch 2 Direct presentation is scheduled to take place on April 2. Weโ€™ll likely hear more about the systemโ€™s new hardware and software during the Direct and possibly upgrades to original Switch games, as it is confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with both digital and physical games.

  • Nintendo has also confirmed that a new Mario Kart game is on the way for the Switch 2 in the short clip showing Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, and other franchise characters racing on Mario Circuit. At the end of the video, players can see the racers driving down a large highway and a desert, indicating that some form of open world or hub could appear in the title.
