Nintendo has officially unveiled Mario Kart for the Switch 2, which includes new grinding mechanics, 24-player support, and more.

The details:

  • As revealed during today's Switch 2 Direct, the game will be a Switch 2 exclusive and one of the console's launch titles, meaning it will arrive on June 5. It will also be the first Mario Kart game to feature up to 24 players.

  • The game will feature a large open world map with varying weather conditions and biomes, day and night cycles, and the ability for players to drive off-road at any time. Players can explore the new world in a Free Roam mode that supports multiple players, or in Knockout races that send racers from one corner to another. Traditional racecourses set in the Mushroom Kingdom will also return, featuring a mix of old and new tracks.

  • Not only has driving underwater and vertically returned from previous entries, but Nintendo has also added the ability for both karts and bikes to grind on rails and telephone wires, which appears to increase speed. In addition to karts and bikes, players can use jet skis, snowmobiles, quad bikes, and other vehicles to compete in races and explore the world.

  • Nintendo has also scheduled a Direct to share more details regarding the game on April 17 at 6 a.m. PT/9 a.m. ET
