Netflix has shut down Night School Studio, the LA-based developer behind Oxenfree, less than six weeks after Night School released its latest game Unhinged. Helsinki-based Moonloot Games has also been closed, and Netflix has cut an undisclosed number of roles from its internal games team as part of the same reorganisation.

The details:

  • Night School's final release, Unhinged, launched on June 30. The 30-minute first-person horror narrative starred Sadie Sink, Zoe Kravitz, and Troy Baker. Netflix acquired the studio in 2021, four years after Night School made its name with Oxenfree.
  • Moonloot Games was founded in Helsinki in 2022 and had no publicly released titles. It was reportedly working on an Animal Crossing-style game at the time of its closure.
  • A Netflix representative said the company sees "an opportunity to be more focused in our execution" and is concentrating on "kids gaming, party games, story-driven fare and games with mainstream hooks."
  • Netflix also cut an undisclosed number of roles from its internal development team alongside the studio closures.
  • This continues a broader retreat from first-party game development. Netflix had previously closed Spry Fox, Boss Fight, and the AAA-focused Team Blue.
