After two decades of attempts to get production underway, Sony’s movie adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid appears to be moving forward again with new directors and a production deal.

The details:

  • According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures has signed Canadian filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to direct a movie adaptation of Konami's Metal Gear Solid for its Columbia Pictures label, as part of a deal that will see their new company Wonderlab develop several upcoming film projects.
  • The Metal Gear Solid movie will now be produced by Avi Arad, who has worked with Sony and Marvel in the past on the live-action Spider-Man films and Spider-Verse animated movies, as well as the company’s upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda project.
  • Attempts to create a film based on Metal Gear Solid date back to at least 2006, when Kojima revealed at E3 that he had negotiated a contract with a Hollywood studio. However, the project eventually stalled and rotated through several directors and producers, with one version directed by Kong: Skull Island filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts having fallen apart amid Kojima’s controversial departure from MGS owner Konami in 2015.
