Meta has laid off over 100 employees across its AR/VR hardware/games division

Meta has laid off more than 100 employees from its Reality Labs division, which oversees its AR and VR projects, including Quest.

The details:

• The Verge reported that the cuts hit teams within Oculus Studios, which develops games for Quest, and parts of Reality Labs' hardware group. Bloomberg also confirmed the layoffs, citing sources who said over 100 workers were impacted. Affected staff include members of the Supernatural fitness app team, which Meta acquired for $400m USD in 2023. In a Facebook post, the team said it was "deeply saddened" by the loss of "some of our incredibly talented team members."
• Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton said "some" Oculus Studios teams were restructured to "work more efficiently on future mixed reality experiences." Meta declined to comment on layoffs outside Oculus Studios, but says it remains "committed to investing in mixed reality experiences," with its plans for Quest and Supernatural unchanged.
• The layoffs follow Meta’s wider staff cuts in 2022 and 2023, when over 20,000 employees were let go. Reality Labs, which has posted over $1bn in monthly losses for two years, has been significantly downsized, including the closure of Lone Echo developer Ready at Dawn last year.
