Mass Effect TV series "officially in development" at Amazon
Amazon's TV adaptation of BioWare's Mass Effect has finally entered production, with Fast & Furious 9 writer Daniel Casey serving as executive producer and writer, alongside Mass Effect 5 project director Michael Gamble.
The details:
A few years ago, it was reported that Amazon was "nearing a deal" to create a show based on the sci-fi series. This report came after an interview with former BioWare lead writer Mac Walters, who explained why plans for a Mass Effect movie adaptation in the early 2010s were abandoned entirely. "It felt like we were always fighting the IP," he said. "What story are we going to tell in 90 to 120 minutes? Are we going to do it justice?"
Variety reports that the show is now "officially in development," with Casey serving as writer, having previously written the screenplay for 2018's sci-fi film Kin. Karim Zreik and Ari Arad have also signed on as executive producers, having previously worked on several Marvel films and shows, including Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Jessica Jones. Arad has also been involved in multiple game adaptations as a producer, including 2022's Uncharted, this year's widely panned Borderlands, and the upcoming Zelda film.
Gamble, the project director for the next mainline Mass Effect game, will also serve as executive producer on the project. There isn't much information about the TV series yet, but given that the next game takes place in the Milky Way long after the events of the original trilogy, the show may be an original story rather than a retelling of Commander Shepard's adventure.
