IGN Entertainment has announced that it has acquired Gamer Network, which includes popular news brands such as Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz, and VG247. Layoffs have already begun throughout the company, affecting many long-term employees.

The details:

  • Reedpop, the previous owner of Gamer Network, announced last year that the company was up for sale and would begin accepting offers after evaluating its UK businesses. It was also stated that the events EGX and MCM would not be included in the deal.

  • IGN has now acquired the company for an undisclosed sum, bringing together Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz, VG247, Rock Paper Shotgun, and Dicebreaker under the same umbrella as its main website, Mashable, PCMag, and others. VGC is not included in the deal despite being a member of the Gamer Network, as it is privately owned. Gamer Network only owned shares in its parent company Hookshot, so Digital Foundry was not purchased outright but will likely continue producing content for Eurogamer.

  • As a result of the acquisition, an unspecified number of employees at the UK-based company have been laid off. This includes GamesIndustry.biz managing editor Brendan Sinclair, veteran VG247 editor Stephany Nunneley-Jackson, and Rock Paper Shotgun deputy editor Alice Bell (via Kotaku’s Ethan Gach).
