Guerrilla Games is said to be focusing on its online live service Horizon project, which means a third mainline title could be years away.

The details:

  • Speaking on Spawn Wave’s latest Spawncast, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier claimed that co-op multiplayer title “Horizon Online” is the studio’s next major project as part of PlayStation’s ongoing push towards live service releases. “Sony's PlayStation's live service initiative was no joke,” Schreier said. “Everybody was like, it's live service games all around, and Horizon is one of the few that hasn't been canceled or hasn't come out and flopped the way Concord did. So yeah, a lot of questions there, but a lot of people are working on that online project.”

  • Schreier also stated that Guerrilla is in a "interesting place" as not only could the third major Horizon entry be "a ways off," but the performance of the recently announced Horizon Zero Dawn remaster and Lego Horizon Adventures could have a direct effect on the live service project. “They’ve got this remaster coming and the Lego game coming,” he said. “What happens if neither of those hit, and it turns out there isn't a ton of interest in Horizon anymore? Are they still gonna be doing the online game? There are a lot of questions around their strategy and around that online game that I certainly have.”

  • As noted by Schreier, PlayStation’s live service push has resulted in more cancellations and flops than successful launches. While Helldivers 2 was a huge hit earlier this year, Firewalk Studios' Concord lasted only two weeks before being taken offline after potentially selling less than 25,000 units. Naughty Dog's The Last of Us multiplayer project was also canceled in December 2023, and an unnamed urban fantasy game was scrapped following London Studio's closure in May.
