George R.R. Martin, best known as the author of Game of Thrones and House of Dragon novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, may have teased that a TV or movie adaptation of Elden Ring could be in the works.

The details:

  • In a recent blog post to his website, the Elden Ring writer commented on rumors of a live-action adaptation after acknowledging that the game had received a Nebula Award for Game Writing. “Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on Elden Ring…” Martin wrote. “I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?”

  • Last week, game director and FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki responded to fan requests for an adaptation, stating he doesn't "see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of the Elden Ring." Despite being open to a movie based on the RPG, he explained that FromSoftware lacks the ability to produce an adaptation and would need to find a "very strong partner" that it could trust.

  • Elden Ring has been FromSoftware's most successful title to date, selling over 25 million copies worldwide as of June 2024. Its first and only expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, was released last month and, despite a rocky start due to technical and balancing issues, sold over five million units, meaning 20% of players returned to the game.
