Sega’s Crazy Taxi reboot will be an open-world, "massively multiplayer" title
Sega has revealed new information about its upcoming reboot of the arcade racing classic Crazy Taxi, confirming that it will be an open-world multiplayer game rather than following a timed level-based structure.
The details:
In a new interview video (via Automaton), producer and original Crazy Taxi director Kenji Kanno and members of the reboot's development team revealed new details about the project. According to the team, they are currently working on adapting Crazy Taxi's classic gameplay for a new West Coast US-inspired "theme park-like" map with multiple players.
Job listings on the company's Japanese career site describe the game as "a new major online title" with an open-world structure and a "massively multiplayer driving game." The listings also confirm that the title is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, with Sega Sapporo previously stating that the project's scope is seen as AAA by the company.
Sega announced that it would reboot five beloved retro franchises last year, including Crazy Taxi, Golden Age, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Jet Set Radio. According to the company, the new titles will incorporate iconic elements from previous releases but with a modern twist. Last week, it was reported that a remake of Jet Set Radio was in the works, with gameplay and screenshots also surfacing online.
