Facepunch Studios has confirmed that Nintendo has issued a takedown request to the developer, forcing it to remove all community-created content using Nintendo IPs from the Garry's Mod Steam Workshop.

The details:

  • The studio shared news of the claim in a Steam post, stating that the recent removal of mods with Nintendo-related content was "not a mistake" and that the company had submitted a takedown request. "Honestly, this is fair enough," Facepunch wrote. "This is Nintendo's content and what they allow and don't allow is up to them. They don't want you playing with that stuff in Garry's Mod - that's their decision, we have to respect that and take down as much as we can."

  • Facepunch stated that the removal of Nintendo content will be an ongoing process, with 20 years of uploads to sort through. Currently, searching "Mario" on the Steam Workshop yields over 5,000 results, with thousands more under "Nintendo," "Zelda," "Animal Crossing," and other IPs.

  • Back in February, it was reported that Nintendo was removing Workshop content, but this was quickly revealed to be the work of a copyright troll impersonating the company. Still, it's not surprising that Nintendo has decided to take down the content as it is extremely protective of its IPs, having taken action against YouTubers modding its games and the Yuzu emulator in the last year. The Dolphin emulator and fan project Portal 64 were also removed from Steam by Valve over concerns about violating Nintendo’s copyright.
