A Game of Thrones MMORPG is not in the works at Nexon
Update: Redanian Intelligence has corrected its report after its source confirmed that they was referring to NETMARBLE's upcoming Game of Thrones mobile title.
It has been claimed that South Korean publisher Nexon is currently working on an MMORPG set in the world of Game of Thrones, but it is unclear who is developing the title.
The details:
According to Witcher fansite Redanian Intelligence, the MMO will take place in the North, which is ruled by the Starks. It will take place between seasons four and five of the TV series, which features plot points from the latter half of A Storm of Swords and parts of A Dance with Dragons in the novels.
Players will be able to choose between a male and female protagonist, with the other character used in the story in a similar manner to Mass Effect: Andromeda. There isn't much else known about its core gameplay systems or release date, but the site notes that the "entire package sounds somewhat like The Elder Scrolls Online," and that the show's actors will not voice their in-game characters.
Nexon has a long history of releasing MMOs and other online-focused games, including MapleStory, KartRider, and The Finals, but many of its titles have struggled to gain traction in the West. The news of a potential MMO has received mixed reactions, with many pointing out Nexon's reputation for shutting down games quickly, adding pay-to-win items after launch, and failing to fix technical issues.
