Frontier Developments, the studio behind dinosaur management title Jurassic World Evolution 3, has confirmed that it is planning to remove generative AI artwork from the game after backlash from its player base.
The details:
- Following the game’s reveal at Summer Game Fest, fans of the series spotted that the portraits of several scientists appeared to have been controversially generated using AI, sparking widespread criticism. Fans then took to social media, Steam, and Reddit to share their stance against AI use in video games in hopes that Frontier would provide a response and eventually remove the avatars.
- In response to a popular Steam post about the situation, Frontier has done exactly as players hoped and confirmed that the portraits will not be included in the game. “Thanks for your feedback on this topic,” the studio wrote. “We have opted to remove the use of generative AI for scientist portraits within Jurassic World Evolution 3.”
- This decision has now resulted in the game’s Steam page no longer featuring a warning about its use of generative AI, although Frontier has yet to reveal what the new, human-made versions of the portraits will look like.
- Use of generative AI in the gaming industry has become an increasingly common concern, with discussions surrounding the controversial technology potentially taking jobs away from human artists while also being trained on existing artwork without permission from the original creators. Valve has forced developers on Steam to disclose their AI use clearly, with Activision being an example of a AAA developer that has released a considerable amount of in-game AI-generated content, as seen in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
