Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will not receive DLC as Square Enix aims to release Part 3 sooner, director says
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has stated that the game will not receive DLC content while the team focuses on Part 3 of the trilogy.
The details:
In a recent interview with the Daily Star, Hamaguchi was asked if fans can expect any additional content in the future, similar to Remake Intergrade's "Episode Intermission," which focused on Yuffie in the middle of the base game. The director stated that this is not the case, as the team believes fans would prefer the final installment of the trilogy over DLC. "I understand it completely, but I think, from my perspective, what the fans really want to see the most is not necessarily DLC,” he said. “They want to see the third part of the series as quickly as possible.”
Hamaguchi went on to explain that Square Enix has since "decided not to focus the development resources on creating additional extra episodes for DLC" and that the studio is now aiming to release the third chapter "as quickly as we can."
While the wait between 2020's Remake and the release of Rebirth in 2024 was not particularly long in retrospect, it has been four years since the PS5's launch, and a similar wait could result in yet another cross-generation release. It's possible that Square wants to avoid this as the updated PS5 version of Remake didn't arrive until 2021, and even then, only Rebirth could fully utilize the PS5's power.
Hamaguchi stated earlier this year that he believes Part 3 will be one of the most beloved games ever created, as the development team has continued to incorporate fan feedback from its predecessors. This includes a potential reduction in the number of minigames as well as an explanation for the game's intentionally unclear story, which left fans wondering at the end of Rebirth.
