Fallout: London developers plan to open a new studio following the mod's success
Team FOLON, the group that created the acclaimed Fallout: London mod for Fallout 4, has revealed that it intends to become a full-fledged indie studio after working on the project as volunteers.
The details:
Last month, the long-awaited total conversion mod finally arrived after months of delays, with CD Projekt-owned storefront GOG announcing that it is the "fastest redeemed game of all time" on the platform, having been downloaded more than 500,000 times in 24 hours. The mod was scheduled to be released in April, but the next-gen update for Fallout 4 caused a number of issues, pushing it back to July 25.
Speaking with the BBC, Team FOLONβs Dean Carter shared that while the group intends to continue supporting the mod with stability updates and previously cut content, it is also looking to form an indie studio. Carter explained that although the team enjoyed creating the free mod for the community, "free doesn't pay our bills," and that it is now using some of the donations from fans to help transform the group into an actual independent developer.
The group hopes that starting their own company will allow them to develop their own ideas, create their own games, and collaborate with the community without having to "speak to anyone above us, such as Bethesda or anything like that."
Fallout: London has been a huge hit among fans. Many people have praised its worldbuilding, setting, tone, and impressive ability to adapt elements of the heavily US-focused series to a UK setting. However, the mod suffers from performance and stability issues, which is not surprising given Fallout 4's engine's history of technical problems. These issues will be addressed in future updates, and players have continued to provide direct support to others who are having problems with the mod's somewhat complex Steam installation.
