According to game director Junya Ishizaki, Elden Ring: Nightreign can only be played solo or in three-player co-op, not as a two-person duo.

The details:

  • Speaking with IGN, Ishizaki explained that the game was designed to be played in three-player co-op, but that it was fully playable solo. When asked by IGN if players could play as a duo, he confirmed that this was not possible, explicitly stating "it's either one-player or three-player."

  • Ishizaki explained that FromSoftware chose three-player co-op for balance reasons, as the studio wanted each player to feel a "sense of accomplishment" while playing. The team discovered that three players provided the ideal balance between gameplay being "too overwhelming or too busy," allowing for both individual exploration of a map and team play during boss battles.

  • In another interview with Famitsu, Ishizaki also confirmed that a "small number" of enemies from the Dark Souls franchise would make an appearance in the game. This comes after fans spotted the Nameless King from Dark Souls 3 as a boss in its reveal trailer, as well as what appears to be the Centipede Demon from the original Dark Souls.
