Borderlands 4 narrative director Sam Winkler has confirmed that the game will cut back on the number of meme references and toilet humor compared to previous entries.

The details:

  • In a recent post on X, Winkler described the title as Gearbox's "most ambitious game yet," adding that the contract writers involved in the project are "some of the funniest people I know."

  • In response to a fan's question about whether the game will have more dark humor than previous entries, the director stated that, while he is "not at liberty" to discuss anything about Borderlands 4, he believes its predecessor had a "overabundance of toilet humor."

  • Winkler went on to say that while he can't guarantee there won't be any toilet humor, he will "cry real tears" if references to popular memes "Skibidi Toilet" and "Hawk Tuah" appear in the final release. "Paul Tassi joked that we were gonna have a gun called Hawk 2A and a fellow dev asked me if it was real and I wanted to put my hand down the sink grinder," he shared.

  • While the Borderlands series has never taken itself too seriously, fans criticized Borderlands 3's writing for its heavy use of "low-effort" humor and a "cringe" cast of characters who felt out of date by 2019 standards. Earlier Borderlands entries, while praised at the time for their inclusion of internet humor, have also been cited as examples of games that have aged poorly in terms of dialogue.
