Doom creator John Romero's previously shelved FPS project has been somewhat revived after Microsoft withdrew funding during its summer cost-cutting measures, with Romero Games now working on a brand-new game that incorporates elements from the scrapped title.

The details:

  • Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Xbox had pulled funding for an unannounced FPS project at Romero Games amid mass layoffs at Microsoft, leaving the studio in a tough financial position. Despite this, Romero clarified that the developer had not shut its doors and was looking for other potential investors to keep the project alive.
  • As revealed by John Romero at Salón del Videojuego de Madrid, the game has essentially "survived cancellation,” with elements of the project now being reworked into a new title. According to Romero, the new project has “nothing to do with the previous game," explaining that the studio can "take pieces out and put them into a brand new indie game" rather than starting from scratch with $50 million worth of existing assets.
  • The game is now "much smaller" than originally conceived, but the studio head stated that it will still be a shooter confirmed with gameplay mechanics that will feel entirely fresh to players. Romero added that the game is inspired by the uniqueness of FromSoftware’s Elden Ring and that he has "never played a game like it" before. "But the things that you do in it will be new to people, the way that going through Elden Ring was a really new experience," Romero said.
