DOOM co-creator John Romero has revealed that his studio, Romero Games, is still working to secure funding for its unannounced first-person shooter project, months after Microsoft pulled support for the game during its wave of mass layoffs earlier this year.

The details:

  • Back in July, it was confirmed that Microsoft had pulled funding for Romero Games' project during the company's layoffs, which resulted in several major cancellations and closures. The decision was made by the tech giant despite the fact that the game was already about halfway through development, with an estimated $50 million already invested. Lack of funding forced the developer to make unexpected job cuts.
  • Speaking with Game Reactor, Romero noted that the studio still owns the IP and that it is currently deciding what to do with the project going forward. The legendary developer shared that there is still massive interest in the game from various companies, noting that a lot of work has already been done. β€œWe have a lot of companies that are interested and still working with us on it, because when you develop a game for years and you put in, say, $50 million into a game, if you move and start working with somebody else, they get $50 million for free,” Romero said.
  • He went on to say that even if the original game cannot be completed, the studio has "$50 million worth of assets that you can use to make another thing," allowing them to "shortcut the end of your game" by expanding on the current project.
