Disney executives are reportedly interested in acquiring Fortnite's Epic Games

It has been claimed that Disney’s senior executives have considered acquiring Epic Games at some point in the future following its major partnership with the Fortnite developer.

The details:

  • The claims originate from veteran tech journalist Alex Heath via The Town podcast, who stated that he knows “for a fact” some senior Disney executives want the entertainment giant to acquire Epic and are waiting for the right moment to do so. However, it’s said that there is pushback against the idea within Disney, including some higher-ups "who think it's a bad idea."
  • Disney had already invested $1.5 billion USD into Epic back in 2024, when it announced the two companies were working together to create a “games and entertainment universe” inside of Fortnite. Epic’s Unreal Engine is also being used across Disney’s theme parks worldwide, and Fortnite has featured several popular IPs in the form of skins and other in-game content.
  • The claims follow mass layoffs at Epic, which affected over 1,000 employees earlier this month. The cuts are a part of a $500 million cost-cutting drive amid a downturn in Fortnite engagement, with Epic stating that it was spending more than it was earning.
