In a surprising collaboration between two of the gaming industry's biggest engine developers, Epic Games and Unity have announced a major partnership that will allow Unity developers to publish games directly into Fortnite starting next year, with Unity's cross-platform commerce platform also coming to Unreal Engine developers.

The details:

  • Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney made an unexpected appearance at Unite 2025, Unity's annual developer conference, to announce the partnership alongside Unity CEO Matt Bromberg. “Recently we got together with Unity and realized that we all share a common view of the need to support fair and open digital platforms… just like the early days of the web, we believe that companies need to work together to build open and interoperable systems,” Sweeney said.
  • Beginning in 2026, Unity developers will be able to publish games directly into Fortnite's ecosystem, a unique feature Sweeney credited to being possible thanks to “some really amazing networking technology” developed by Unity. These Unity-made games will appear in Fortnite's discovery system alongside Unreal Engine games and be eligible to participate in the Fortnite Creator Economy, where developers currently earn hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
  • Unity will also bring its new in-app purchase SDK to all Unreal Engine developers in early 2026, giving them access to Unity's cross-platform commerce platform to manage digital catalogs, payment providers, web shops, pricing, promotions, and live operations across PC, mobile, and web from a single dashboard.
