Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's developer wants to bring it to Switch 2, but says it is a "big technical challenge"

Sandfall Interactive has confirmed it is interested in a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, but the studio is being candid about the difficulty involved. The game's use of Unreal Engine 5 is the central obstacle, with several key UE5 features simply not functioning on Switch 2's hardware.

The details:

  • Studio CTO Tom Guillermin told Automaton: "It's a big technical challenge because we tried to do something beautiful with the game, but of course, the Switch 2 is not as powerful as the PlayStation or the Xbox Series X." He added that it is "way too early to announce anything."
  • The core issue is Unreal Engine 5. Lead character artist Alan Reynaud explained that many UE5 features do not work on Switch 2, and the team needs to track Epic's ongoing engine updates before it can properly assess what a port would require.
  • One potential solution the team is watching is Lumen Lite, a lighter version of UE5's global illumination system being developed specifically for lower-powered hardware like Switch 2. Whether it arrives in time and proves sufficient is unclear.
  • Sandfall is a studio of around 30 developers. One report suggests early work on the port may already be underway, though nothing has been officially confirmed. Expedition 33 has been one of 2026's most commercially and critically successful releases.
