SuperAuthenti, the developer of Catly, the strange open-world pet simulator unveiled at The Game Awards, has denied using generative AI in its trailer and other promotional content.

The details:

  • Catly, which was first announced at The Game Awards last week, drew immediate criticism from viewers for allegedly using AI to create its trailer. The claims stemmed from its unusual visuals, which included detailed fur, highly saturated colors, and short five-second clips that are within the capabilities of modern generative AI tools.

  • Players also began to analyze the game's Steam page and other promotional materials, pointing out a number of inconsistencies in the wording of the description and irregularities in the images. Furthermore, a Reddit user discovered that studio co-founder Kevin Yeung previously co-founded another developer that created games that heavily incorporated Web3 technology.

  • However, a representative from SuperAuthenti has responded, denying the allegations. In a statement to IGN, the PR representative stated that neither the trailer nor the game were created using AI and that the studio was "very surprised by such speculations." In addition to the statement, IGN was shown a work-in-progress version of the trailer, which the publication said appeared to confirm it was not AI-generated.

  • The spokesperson stated that the game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and that the developer is using "various software" to create its uncanny, hyper-realistic visuals.

  • The company also denied that the game would include any Web3 technology, claiming that "zero blockchain technology" or NFTs are used in Catly or by SuperAuthenti. "Our company/project has never issued any blockchain currency and any NFTs,” the representative said. “Our company does not and has never owned any blockchain currency and NFTs."
