Cancelled MMORPG Blue Protocol is being revived by Tencent as “Star Resonance”
Bandai Namco's MMORPG Blue Protocol has been given a new lease on life following its cancellation. Tencent-backed studio BOKURA is now working on a "new" title, "Star Resonance," which is based on the original IP.
The details:
Back in August, Bandai Namco announced that Blue Protocol would be shutting down in Japan early next year, with the developer canceling all plans for the long-awaited global release. The company stated that it would be unable to "provide a service that satisfies" all of its players, with many fans noting its rapid decline in popularity in Japan.
However, the game’s legacy will continue with the announcement of "Star Resonance" (via Automaton), which is being developed by BOKURA, a subsidiary of Chinese tech giant Tencent. A number of Blue Protocol developers have also joined the studio to work on the project, with BOKURA having previously collaborated with the team on a proposed Blue Protocol mobile game.
The game, referred to as an "MMO-ARPG based on the Blue Protocol IP," is set in the same world as its predecessor but will feature a new storyline. Its gameplay systems will also be overhauled, as shown in a new trailer for the game, which showcases battle and social gameplay.
Star Resonance is set to arrive on both PC and mobile, with crossplay support. The game's full release date in China or any other region has yet to be announced, but Chinese players can now register for its closed beta test.
