Riot Games announces physical League of Legends card game Project K
Riot Games has announced Project K, a new physical card game set in the League of Legends universe that will debut in China before going global.
The details:
In a new announcement video, Riot revealed that its first physical card game is being developed by a "small" internal team led by director Dave Guskin and executive producer Chengran Chai. The game will be based on the League of Legends IP, and a teaser from Riot China earlier this year showed cards featuring champions such as Miss Fortune, Darius, and Ahri.
Project K is set to release in China in 2025 as it has secured a publishing partner, but a global release will follow once a partner is found in North America, Europe, and other territories. Riot has also confirmed plans to create a competitive ecosystem with global and domestic events. "We want to have competitive play that reaches from the store level all the way up to national-level tournaments and maybe even global events," Chai said.
It has also been confirmed that Project K has no ties to Riot's existing digital card game, Legends of Runeterra, beyond sharing its "rich champion design philosophies." This has caused some backlash among the game's smaller but passionate community, as its development team was one of the hardest hit by Riot's company-wide layoffs earlier this year, resulting in a reduction in the scope of its future plans.
