Baldur's Gate 3 is officially set for a television adaptation on HBO, with The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin joining the project, while game developer Larian is not involved in any capacity.

The details:

  • As reported by Variety, HBO is working on a live-action Baldur's Gate series set after the events of the franchise’s third mainline entry, which was met with critical acclaim following its launch in 2023. However, developer Larian Studios is not involved in the project, with the studio announcing that it would move on from the IP last year.
  • Craig Mazin, known for HBO's The Last of Us and Chernobyl, is serving as a showrunner and executive producer and has revealed that he is a huge fan of the source material. “After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of ‘Baldur’s Gate 3,’ it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of the Coast created,” Mazin said in a statement. “I am a devoted fan of ‘D&D’ and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring ‘Baldur’s Gate’ and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
  • The series will expand the Dungeons and Dragons “Forgotten Realms” universe but focus on a storyline set after Baldur's Gate 3 and will feature new and returning characters from the world of Faerûn.
