Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora's physical version requires an internet connection to install
It has been discovered that even if players own a physical disc copy of Ubisoft's upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the game requires an internet connection to install.
The details:
According to Reddit user Interesting-Squash8, they quickly discovered that their physical PS5 copy of the game is unplayable after receiving it before the intended release date, with inserting the disc simply displaying an image of the game's logo with its December 7, 2023 release date.
In an attempt to get the game to boot, the user changed the time and date on the PS5 to after its release date and started it up without an internet connection, only to be met with the same image, implying that it will require some form of online verification or day one patch to function. The final box art for Frontiers of Pandora also states, "Internet required to install the game," confirming the requirement.
The situation has once again raised concerns about game preservation, as developers are pushing live service and the requirement to always have an internet connection, with players concerned about server closures leading to unplayable games and wondering why content is not immediately accessible on a full priced disc copy.
