Xbox exec says it needs more smaller games a day after the closure of Hi-Fi Rush developer
Just one day after shutting down Tango Gameworks and three other studios, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty reportedly stated that the company should focus on releasing more smaller titles in the future.
The details:
According to The Verge, Xbox held a town hall meeting to discuss the future of its game studios, during which Booty allegedly stated that Xbox needs "smaller games that give us prestige and awards."
The new goal surprised staff as Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fi Rush was regarded as one of Xbox's smaller games last year. The game won several awards, received high praise from the gaming community, and was said to have met Microsoft's commercial expectations.
Shortly after The Verge's report, Hi-Fi Rush director John Johanas appeared perplexed by Booty's comment, sharing a screenshot of a slightly irritated NPC from the game on X.
As for the recent studio closures, Bloomberg reports that ZeniMax was forced to make cuts, resulting in the closure of Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks, both of which were still pitching new projects. Booty also reportedly stated that Arkane Austin's closure was unrelated to the disappointing launch of Redfall last year.
