Unity hit with another round of mass layoffs, employees informed via 5am email

Unity is undergoing yet another wave of mass layoffs, this time affecting entire teams, as employees were notified via an internal email sent at 5 a.m. PST.

The details:

  • As reported by 80 Level, affected employees across the globe received a message from the company's no-reply email at 5 a.m. PST announcing that their positions had been "eliminated" due to "organizational changes." It is currently unknown how many employees have been affected, but entire teams have reportedly been laid off.

  • CEO Matt Bromberg later confirmed the cuts in an internal memo acquired by 80 Level, stating that Unity is currently "stretched across too many products." The CEO outlined the company's plans, which include investing in Industry, Live Services, and AI, optimizing and improving the Unity engine, and splitting its internal revenue team in two. Bromberg also admitted that "there is some exhaustion associated with prior changes" at the company, but believes that the changes will "transform our position in the marketplace and provide a springboard to long-term growth."

  • In a post on the Unity forums, former employee Shanee Nishry confirmed that the entire team working on the engine's recently released Behavior package had been laid off. While Nishry did not reveal how many people were affected, he did share that he reached out to higher-ups in an attempt to make the tool open-source. "Unfortunately, we were told today that our team is included in the latest round of layoffs and we will not be able to support you any longer," Nishry wrote. "I've reached out to leadership to ask if they can open-source the project, but there is no guarantee.”

  • In just a few years, Unity has laid off over 3,500 employees in six waves. This included major cuts at the start of 2024, when 1,800 people lost their jobs, accounting for 25% of the company's workforce at the time. Bromberg took over as CEO of Unity in May of last year, after John Riccitiello resigned following a controversy regarding the engine’s pricing.
