Ubisoft has announced that Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles will shut down on October 30, 2026, roughly two years after it launched as one of the company's flagship Web3 projects. The closure follows a failed attempt to rescue the game by stripping out its blockchain features entirely.
The details:
- Champions Tactics launched in October 2024 as a "Web3 competitive turn-based RPG," with characters that could be bought, traded, and minted as NFTs through an in-game marketplace. Some individual champion units were listed for more than $63,000 during the game's early period.
- In May 2026, Ubisoft announced it would "progressively transition away from blockchain functionality," citing changes to the blockchain infrastructure supporting the game. It removed the ability to mint and sell NFT characters entirely in the weeks that followed.
- Following that, Ubisoft launched a stripped-down non-blockchain version of the game on Steam called Champions Tactics Reforged. It failed to attract meaningful player interest, and the studio has now confirmed the full shutdown.
- The closure adds to a pattern of Ubisoft struggling to maintain its Web3 projects. The company has been one of the more persistent major publishers in pursuing blockchain gaming, but has repeatedly failed to find an audience willing to engage with it.
