According to reports, Ubisoft is working on a new battle royale title based heavily on Respawn's Apex Legends in order to capitalize on the game's declining player base.

The details:

  • As reported by Insider Gaming, the publisher is currently working on a battle royale game codenamed "Scout," which is heavily influenced by Apex Legends and even used the game's branding as a placeholder thumbnail at one point. According to the report, the game has been in development for "at least a couple of years," and its cast of characters is "very similar" to those found in Apex, including Pathfinder, Wraith, and Lifeline.

  • According to an anonymous source, Ubisoft's higher-ups believe it can capitalize on Apex's declining player count by offering an alternative "hero Battle Royale," despite claims that its own researchers are looking beyond the aging genre.

  • It is unclear which studios are involved in the project, but it is worth noting that the publisher has previously attempted to create several battle royale titles, including a cancelled Splinter Cell title, with only the short-lived Hyperscape making it to release.

  • Earlier this year, EA CEO Andrew Wilson revealed that Apex was losing popularity and, despite previously stating that it had no plans to create a sequel, confirmed that a major "Apex 2.0" update was in development. The decision to create a "bigger, more meaningful update" is an attempt to increase player count and the financial performance of the game following controversial changes to its monetization systems, which were met with backlash and ultimately failed to drive overall engagement.
