Bethesda’s Todd Howard has said that despite seven years having passed since its reveal, The Elder Scrolls VI’s launch is still far away.

The details:

  • Speaking with GQ, Howard provided a brief but much-needed update on the progress of The Elder Scrolls 6’s development, confirming that it is “still a long way off.” “I’m preaching patience,” he said. “I don’t want fans to feel anxious.”
  • The director explained that there are currently “hundreds of people” working on the Fallout series, but that work on TES6 is an “everyday thing,” adding that he believes the wait between Skyrim and the game is far too long. "I do like to have a break between them, where it isn't like a 'plus one' sequel," Howard said. "I think it's also good for an audience to have a break — The Elder Scrolls has been too long, let's be clear. But we wanted to do something new with Starfield. We needed a creative reset."
  • Unsurprisingly, there is no additional update regarding a release window for the highly anticipated RPG, but Howard suggested that Bethesda may opt for a similar “shadow launch” to Oblivion Remastered, which was revealed and released at the same time. "I like to just announce stuff and release it," he said. "My perfect version — and I'm not saying this is going to happen — is that it's going to be a while, and then, one day, the game will just appear."
  • TES6 was first announced back at E3 2018, where it was confirmed to be in pre-production. Since then, Bethesda has released its new IP, Starfield, to mixed reviews, with updates regarding The Elder Scrolls as a series being few and far between. However, Howard has confirmed that TES6 will be released before Fallout 5, but it has been reported that a remaster of Fallout 3 is also on the way.
