Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a spiritual successor to Obsidian’s beloved RPG Knights of the Old Republic, is now in development and being directed by KOTOR and Mass Effect director Casey Hudson.

The details:

  • As announced during The Game Awards, the game will be a single-player action RPG developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Not much is known about the title outside of its teaser trailer, but it has been described as "an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness.”
  • Hudson, who is best known for directing the original KOTOR as well as EA’s Mass Effect trilogy, is serving as the game’s director. “Working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was one of the defining experiences of my career,” Hudson said in a statement. “With Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, we’re telling a completely new and different story with everything we’ve learned since—crafting an adventure about choice, destiny, and the timeless struggle between light and dark. It’s a dream come true to once again collaborate with Lucasfilm Games.”
  • The studio behind Fate of the Old Republic, Arcanaut, consists of “veteran game developers and storytellers,” so it’s likely that several of its employees have worked on either KOTOR or similar projects in the past. However, despite the game sharing a similar title, it's not directly linked to the previous RPG series.
