Sony has stated that PS5 sales are currently on par with those of the PS4 within the same timeframe. However, the company has stated that it is considering another price increase for the five-year-old platform.

The details:

  • In its latest investor report, Sony disclosed that 2.8 million PS5 consoles were sold in the last quarter, bringing the total to 18.5 million for the fiscal year. This is down from 20.8 million sold last year, but it is comparable to the PS4's sales just over four years into its lifecycle.

  • Overall, the PS5 has now sold 77.8 million units worldwide since its launch in late 2020, trailing the PS4 by one million. While comparable, it's worth noting that the PS5 was not only more expensive at launch, but it also experienced several price increases and was plagued by shortages during its first year on the market.

  • Sony has stated that, following its recent price increase for the console across several regions, it is considering another price increase in response to high US tariffs. This means that as Sony attempts to offset the expected 100 billion JPY in additional fees, the costs will then be "passed" on to consumers. Currently, PS5 consoles are primarily manufactured in China, which has been hit with a 145% tariff that has been temporarily suspended and reduced to 30% for 90 days.

  • Going forward, the company expects console sales to decline as the current console generation comes to an end and prices rise. Meanwhile, game sales remain strong, with Sony reporting a 43% increase in gaming revenue thanks to the success of third-party game releases.
