Square Enix has announced that mobile title Kingdom Hearts Missing Link has been cancelled three years after its initial announcement.

The details:

  • Missing Link was first announced in 2022 as part of the franchise's 20th anniversary celebrations, and it was set to be an action mobile title with GPS functionality. Players would be able to create and customize their own character, as well as meet and interact with various Disney and original Square Enix characters along the way.

  • Originally scheduled to be released last year, the game has gone through multiple beta tests, with little mention of it since. However, Square has announced in a post to X that it has been canceled. The developer explained that while it "worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players," it ultimately decided that it "would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time."

  • Concluding its statement, Square reiterated that the cancellation has not affected the development of Kingdom Hearts 4, which is still in the works. Little has been revealed about the project since its announcement during the same livestream as Missing Link, but series creator Tetsuya Nomura has stated that it will be the start of a new story that will come to an end at some point as he prepares to retire.
