Shadow of the Colossus movie is "not abandoned," director says

Over a decade after being confirmed as the project's director, Andrés Muschietti has stated that plans for a Shadow of the Colossus have not been abandoned, but funding has prevented its creation.

The details:

  • Back in 2009, Sony announced that it was planning to create a film adaptation of Team Ico's popular PS2 game Shadow of the Colossus, with game director Fumito Ueda possibly involved. Muschietti was hired as director in 2014 after Chronicle director Josh Trank left the project after only two years, but no new information has been shared since.

  • In an interview with Radio TU (via The Gamer), the director stated that the film has not been abandoned and that he has a script that he "likes a lot." Muschietti went on to say that securing funding for the film has been the biggest challenge because, while it is a "cult game," investors are unlikely to put up the $200 million the director is asking for. "There are different versions of the film, and obviously, I want them to give me $200m, but this is another factor to take into account,” Muschietti said.

  • In comparison, Marvel's Deadpool vs. Wolverine had a $200 million budget but was a much safer bet for investors due to its use of popular IPs. In terms of video game adaptations, Sony's film based on the much more popular Uncharted series, which starred Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, was made on a smaller $120 million budget.

  • Sony recently announced that film adaptations of Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn are in the works. Although neither project is likely to have a $200 million budget, it could open up opportunities for Shadow of the Colossus if Muschietti is willing to consider a scaled-back vision of the film.
