Sony announces Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn film adaptations are in development
Sony has announced that film adaptations of Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn are in the works, after the production of a Horizon TV show was halted last year.
The details:
Speaking at CES 2025, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash announced that the company is working alongside Sony Pictures to create a film based on Helldivers. Although nothing else has been revealed about the project, some fans have questioned if a Helldivers 2 film needs to be created as the game draws heavy inspiration from 1997 film Starship Troopers, which Sony also owns the rights to.
Qizilbash went on to say that a film based on Horizon Zero Dawn is currently in the "early stages" of development at Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions. “Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far-future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen,” Qizilbash said.
In July 2024, it was reported that production of a Horizon TV series had been halted after showrunner Steve Blackman was accused of "bullying, manipulative, and retaliatory behaviour" by 12 former colleagues. Despite the Umbrella Academy showrunner denying the allegations, it was reported that Netflix had decided to cancel its future plans to work with Blackman on Horizon and his original show, Orbital.
