Sega has seemingly reignited its battle with former rival Nintendo in a new advertisement for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds that recreates its classic Mario Kart vs. Sonic commercial from the 1990s.

The details:

  • The commercial, titled "Come Race on Our Level," debuted on September 15 and is a modern reimagining of Sega's legendary 1992 "Blast Processing" commercial. Starting with an older flat-screen TV showing blurred Mario Kart World gameplay, the narrator says, “We all know that kart racing game. It’s great. We don’t need to show it to you.” However, right next to the TV, another is playing Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, with the narrator stating, "But what if you can blast through and race on a whole other level?"
  • We then see a high-speed race car with Sonic Racing:Crossworlds is playing on the rear, blazing down a stretch of road with several intense shots, while a caravan showing off Mario Kart World is left behind next to a tortoise. The narrator then adds even more fuel to the fire, saying, “Or what if you want to roam around on the open road?” which is a direct reference to the game’s divisive open-world structure.
  • Old-school fans may recognize that the commercial is a direct homage to the classic Sega vs. Nintendo days of the early 90s, when the former attacked the Super Nintendo in order to promote the Sega Genesis. The original ad compares Sonic the Hedgehog and the original Super Mario Kart in a similar fashion, with both the new commercial including the iconic “welcome to the next level” slogan and the race car’s driver shouting “Sega!”
