According to reports, Sega of America plans to lay off 61 employees in two waves beginning in March.

The details:

  • As reported by the automated X account @WhatLayoff and Eurogamer, the layoffs were made public following the issue of a Californian WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notice. The notice is legally required to inform employees 60 days before any significant layoffs.

  • The Employment Development Department of the State of California has confirmed the legitimacy of the claims, revealing that Sega intends to lay off 49 employees and another 12 on March 8.

  • Sega of America is thought to currently employ around 440 people, meaning the layoffs will affect roughly 13% of its current workforce.

  • The Allied Employees Guild Improving Sega union also stated on X that the layoffs are due to the company's decision to outsource QA as part of its localization effort, which had been revealed a few months ago.
