Roblox has announced that it will roll out its age estimation feature to all accounts that wish to use its communication systems by the end of 2025 in an attempt to improve child safety on the platform.

The details:

  • Roblox currently offers several methods for users to verify their age, including providing government-approved IDs, verified parental consent, and more recently, using AI to estimate ages via a video selfie. The company has now shared that it plans to expand the requirement to “all Roblox users who access our on-platform communication features by the end of this year” in order to “provide a more accurate measure of a user’s age than simply relying on what someone types in when they create an account.”
  • Roblox has also recently implemented several other systems in an attempt to improve safety throughout the website. This includes “Trusted Connections,” which limits communication between children and those who they personally know; “Roblox Sentinel,” an open-source AI feature designed to detect child endangerment; and improving several detection and filter systems for harmful text, voice, and avatars.
  • The gaming platform has been the center of various safeguarding controversies in recent years, with tens of thousands of reports of child abuse and endangerment being shared online and with crime agencies around the world. Due to its player base mostly consisting of children, it has become a major target for predators, and despite slowly implementing measures to combat the growing issue, co-founder and CEO Dave Baszucki has stated that the parents should keep their children away from Roblox if they are concerned about safety.
