Arkane’s Redfall will require an online connection at all times

Arkane Austin’s upcoming co-op FPS Redfall will require an internet connection to play, even in single-player modes.

The details:

• In an FAQ, Bethesda confirmed that Redfall requires a persistent online connection for both single-player and co-op modes. The game will also require the creation of a Bethesda.net account, which must be linked to either your Steam or Xbox ID.
• Regardless of the fact that most gamers oppose the move, online-only titles are becoming increasingly popular among studios. Many argue that it is completely unnecessary when the game has a single-player mode with no online functionality, pointing out that servers can only be provided for so long before they are closed, rendering the game unplayable. Sim City 2013 suffered from numerous bugs as a result of the implementation of always-online DRM, highlighting other potential issues. Back 4 Blood is a recent example of this practice, as the game did not include an offline single-player campaign until months later in an update.
• Redfall was announced at Bethesda's E3 showcase in 2021, but its release date was pushed back to the first half of 2023. The final release date of May 2, 2023, was recently revealed at Xbox's Developer Direct, along with some full-length gameplay of the open-world vampire-hunting shooter. It will be available on Xbox Series X/S and PC, with Xbox Game Pass offering the game from day one.

What else is happening at ZeniMax/Bethesda?

• Despite not being shown at Developer Direct, Bethesda's upcoming IP Starfield will get its own showcase soon as we progress through its planned release window of "the first half of 2023." Some rumors have circulated about a delay in the release of the space-based RPG; however, Microsoft has not confirmed these claims, nor have they been supported by evidence.
• ZeniMax Online Studios is hard at work on the next major Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) expansion. Last month's Developer Direct show revealed ESO: Necrom, giving us a detailed look at the new Arcanist class and Telvanni Pennisula. The expansion is scheduled to be released on June 20, 2023.
• A Bethesda event, separate from the Starfield showcase, is reportedly planned for March. It has been stated that the event is open to the media, but we do not know if the general public will be granted access. Redfall and ESO are rumored to be present, but Bethesda could be showing off something we haven't seen yet.
