Roblox introduces new age-based accounts and stricter controls for younger players
Roblox

Roblox is rolling out new age‑gated account types and expanded parental controls designed to give children under 16 more age‑appropriate experiences and limit who they can talk to and what they can play on the platform.

The details:

  • Starting in mid‑May, Roblox will automatically place users into one of three account categories: Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, or a standard Roblox account. In the US, the age brackets will be set at ages 5–8 for Kids, 9–15 for Select, and 16+ for standard accounts.
  • These account types use Roblox’s existing content maturity labels (Minimal, Mild, Moderate, and Restricted) to limit which experiences players can enter. For example, Roblox Kids accounts will be limited to Minimal and Mild experiences, and chat will be disabled by default to prevent younger players from being exposed to potential threats or inappropriate material.
  • Meanwhile, the middle “Select” tier will be able to access Moderate‑rated games and can communicate with similarly aged users and parent‑approved “trusted friends,” while full Roblox accounts at 16 still keep Restricted content locked until a user turns 18.
  • The system is built on Roblox’s mandatory age-check framework, which uses facial age estimation or ID verification to assign an age rating to their account. Players who choose to skip verification will see their accounts be labeled as Roblox Kids accounts, locking them to inoffensive and restrictive content.
