Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard director Koshi Nakanishi will oversee the development of the franchise's next installment, which could potentially be Resident Evil 9.

The details:

  • During a segment at Capcom Next, Nakanishi revealed that he was now working on a new Resident Evil game while discussing the mobile release of RE7. "It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil 7]," Nakanishi said. "But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial. I can't share any details just yet, but I hope you're excited for the day I can."

  • RE7 was viewed as a survival horror revival for the series by fans following the sixth mainline entry, which received mixed to negative reviews due to its emphasis on action rather than horror. Nakanishi previously worked as the lead designer for RE5, as well as the director for the first Revelations title and Mercenaries 3.

  • Last year, leaker Dusk Golem claimed that RE9 was targeting a 2025 release, with Capcom planning to skip another remake in 2024, despite a fan survey asking about future remakes and remasters. The leaker also claimed that the publisher had plans for the franchise until 2029, but did not provide any additional details.
