Blizzard has announced and released remasters of the first two Warcraft games, as well as a patch for the critically panned Warcraft 3 Reforged, to address a variety of issues.

The details:

  • Blizzard announced the titles during its Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct livestream on Wednesday, which include enhancements to both visuals and the overall user experience. Both remasters prominently feature hand-drawn graphics that are said to retain the originals' art style and can be switched between in-game at any time.

  • The developer has also made various quality-of-life improvements, particularly for Warcraft 1, such as "modern controls" that allow for faster game speed, right-click movement, and unit selection using a bounding box. Both games have also received UI and UX improvements such as health bars, tooltips, and hotkey indicators.

  • Blizzard has also stated that custom maps from previous games are compatible with the remasters, and Warcraft 2's multiplayer features have been retained.

  • With the release of the remasters, Blizzard has returned to Warcraft 3 Reforged and released a 2.0 patch. The game was criticized at launch for a variety of technical issues and unnecessary changes, but with the patch, it now has a reworked UI, hotkey customization, and other improvements. Its visuals have also been revamped, with new environments and lighting, and its assets have been up-rezzed to HD.

  • All three games are available on Battle.net in the new "Battle Chest" bundle for $39.99, but 1, 2, and 3 Reforged can still be purchased separately for $9.99, $14.99, and $29.99, respectively. Those who opt for the Battle Chest will also receive the original version of Warcraft 1 and the previous Battle.net release of 2.
