PlayStation has finally announced its long-awaited showcase for Wednesday, May 24, with some big announcements expected.
The details:
- PlayStation confirmed in a new blog post that the rumors of a showcase taking place the week of May 25 were correct, with a livestream taking place on both YouTube and Twitch on Wednesday, May 24 at 1 p.m. Pacific Time. The showcase will last over an hour, and the company states we'll see "several new creations" from its first-party studios as well as more from third-party and indie developers for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2.
- In terms of what to expect, rumors of Konami appearing with a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 have been circulating for a while, with the game reportedly being a PS5 exclusive of some sort. Konami is reportedly working on a new Castlevania game as well. There will also most likely be a final launch trailer for Final Fantasy XVI, gameplay from Marvel's Spider-Man 2, information about The Last of Us: Factions, and possibly teasers or trailers for Elden Ring's DLC, the rumored Twisted Metal reboot, and the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.
- The wording of PlayStation's announcement tweet has piqued people's interest, as it uses the word "spellbinding" to describe the third-party titles that will be shown off. Claims that Elden Ring developer FromSoftware is working on a new game titled "Spellbound" surfaced earlier this month, but many dismissed them due to the "generic" name. Some speculate that this is a hint to the alleged project, while others believe that it could be related to Final Fantasy. Of course, there's always the possibility that everyone is reading too much into a tweet's wording and Sony isn't implying anything.
More PlayStation news:
- Final Strike Games' sci-fi shooter, which had already been in development for three years, has reportedly been canceled by Sony. The game was described as a "new IP AAA PVP shooter" for the PlayStation 5 and PC, with no explanation provided for its cancellation.
- Sony allegedly canceled a PS5 exclusive developed by Deviation Games with a $50 million budget. When asked why the project was canceled, a former developer said they were "really not sure, other than probably cost-cutting."
