Polish studio People Can Fly has announced that it is joining forces with Xbox’s The Coalition to support the development of Gears of War: E-Day, marking its long-awaited return to the franchise.

The details:

  • People Can Fly confirmed its involvement in the project in a brief statement released to its website yesterday. “Returning to collaborate on the next chapter of this legendary saga is both a privilege and an exciting opportunity to build upon the intense, visceral action and rich storytelling that fans have come to love,” CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski said. “We are deeply grateful for our partners’ trust and support on this journey.”

  • The studio previously helped develop the first three Gears titles before moving on to create 2013's Gears of War: Judgment, which served as a prequel to the original trilogy. Outside of the series, it is best known as the developer of Bulletstorm and Outriders, though the studio has gone through a few rough patches in recent years, involving layoffs and project cancellations.

  • Gears of War: E-Day was announced last summer after years of leaks and rumors, and it is set to be a prequel that follows Marcus Fenix during the events of Emergence Day, when the Locust launched an assault on Sera. It is confirmed that John DiMiaggio and Carlos Ferro will return to voice Fenix and sidekick Dominic Santiago, respectively, but little else is known about the project.
